• Caedmon Charity Tree Appeal

  A charity Christmas tree adorned with fundraising baubles has taken pride of place in a local primary school, but it has a special place in the heart of one member of staff.

   

  Teaching assistant, Janice Tait, discovered her 16-year-old son, Jon, had leukemia in February last year, just two days before her birthday. Janice, who has worked at Caedmon Primary School for a decade, was directed to the work of the Teenage Cancer Trust and is now encouraging the pupils at her school to raise money for the charity that supported her son during difficult times.
  
  Janice remembers the support given to her and Jon when they needed it most. “The Teenage Cancer Trust stepped in immediately and it was so reassuring that they were there to help. It’s an incredible facility, I cannot commend them enough; Jon spent a lot of time in the penthouse which overlooks St James’ Park. He played snooker, listened to music on the jukebox and just tried to maintain some normality.

  “They simply helped Jon and others like him to lead a normal teenage life.”
   

  Now, pupils at Caedmon Primary School in Bensham are raising funds for the charity by decorating baubles for the school’s Christmas tree and pledging a donation to the charity’s work. It is hoped that the fundraising incentive will raise in the region of £200. Clive Wisby, headteacher at the school, said: “We asked children to decorate baubles and give a donation to the charity and the response has been remarkable. Parents and children at the school know how much the Teenage Cancer Trust means to Janice and her family and we are all thrilled to be able to support their work.”
  
  Janice, who last year won Teaching Assistant of the Year, is now looking to the future. “I hope that Jon will make a full recovery and fulfill his ambition to go to university to study Electrical Engineering. We are excited for his birthday - he turns 18 this month - and so far, he’s doing really well.”
