Hello! Welcome to the Year 1 Class page! Our names are Miss Birkbeck and Miss Roberts and we are your Year 1 class teachers. This year we are also very lucky to have Mrs Drape who will also be working and supporting the teaching everyday in Year 1 too! We are all so excited to work with the children throughout Year 1 and become a part of their learning journey at school. At times, other members of staff from around school may be working with individuals or groups.
In Year 1 we believe that it is important for children to build their love of learning and enjoy their school experience therefore this will be something that we aim to build and achieve in Year 1. In Year 1 we hope to provide the children with a balance of a challenging and engaging curriculum that stimulate the children and enthuses them to aim high and become creative and hardworking learners! We work hard to ensure that all children are challenged and that throughout their learning there are a range of opportunities for practical and active learning.
We aim to provide a curriculum that will meet national expectations and is tailored to suit the needs and interests of your child.
Mornings in Year 1 are very busy with Read Write Inc sessions taking place daily and Literacy and Maths lessons being conducted. Due to the soft start approach to the school day, children are expected to be in school no later than 8:55am to ensure that a smooth transition between registration and Read Write Inc lessons.
Afternoons are filled with non core subjects that include Geography, History, Art, DT, PSHE, RE and Music.
Miss Roberts will carry out non core subjects on her day of teaching in Year 1.
Throughout all learning opportunities within Year 1 we aim to incorporate as much active and outdoor learning exposure to enrich and enhance your child’s progression throughout the year.
Year 1 is a crucial year in the journey for children learning to read. It is for this reason that we prioritise reading as the main homework task. Children will be provided with a reading book from school and we would like them to read every night for a short time. An adult should read with the child and support them asking questions and generally sharing the story. Reading books should be brought to school every day, so that staff can comment in reading diaries. There is a class reading incentive in place this year to promote reading.
Year 1 will have a PE lesson on a Tuesday afternoon. Children will be taking a PE top home and this is to be worn with tracksuit bottoms, shorts or leggings.
On PE days, children can come into school with their PE kit.
Our PE lessons throughout the year will consist of a wide range of sporting activities that aim to develop movement, balance and co-ordination.
As a school we are looking at the best way to support the learning taking place at school at home. At the moment we will not be sending home work out. Instead we encourage reading as much as possible and practice spellings as frequent as possible.
Finally… Year 1 is a very exciting time and we are thrilled to be sharing the time with the children and their families! We are really looking forward to the year ahead and helping all of our children to be the best that they can be.
