Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Hello and welcome to Year 5 from Mrs Inns, Miss Gillespie and Mrs Gillender - the Year 5 teaching team!

As the children begin to prepare for the transition to secondary school, Upper Key Stage 2 is quite often one of the most memorable times in a child's school life. Year 5 sees the start of this, with a great number of opportunities for the children to take more responsibility - both for their own learning and in the way they act as role models within our school and the wider school community.

In Year 5, we will be working hard to promote the six Rs of our school: the values of respect, resilience, responsibility, readiness, reflectiveness and resourcefulness within every aspect of our learning. We will provide all of the children with as many opportunities as possible to grow, learn and develop as individuals and most importantly to have fun and enjoy their time at school as they fulfil both their academic and personal potential.

Year 5 Staff

Mrs Inns is the class teacher. When Mrs Inns has her PPA, the class will be taught by Mr Rodger. Miss Gillespie is the class teaching assistant, and Mrs Gillender will be working with us 3 days a week.

PE

Year 5's PE day is WednesdayChildren will be required to come to school wearing their PE kit. Children will be provided with a red PE top and hoodie, but must wear their own footwear (trainers or sand shoes) and shorts/joggers.

Swimming

Year 5 will swim at Gateshead Leisure Centre every Tuesday. Children will return to school for their usual pick up time. You are required to provide your child with suitable swimwear and a towel (goggles are optional). A plastic bag is useful to put wet items in.

Class Dojo

Class Dojo is an online portal that can be used to communicate with the team and it is also where we share home learning. If you have not already signed up to the class page, then please ask for a registration letter. Be sure to check the site regularly, as Mrs Inns and the school will use the site to post messages and news. Please be aware, Mrs Inns only has access to her messages between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Home Learning

It is expected that children will arrive each day at school with their reading book and reading record. We expect children to read daily and have their reading record signed by an adult or older sibling at least once per week. In addition to this, children are expected to learn weekly spellings using Spelling Frame, practise times tables using Times Table Rock Stars and access My Maths work set online. Further information is given below.

Daily Home Reading

Children are expected to read for around 15-30 minutes per day during the week and will always have a school reading book, which is linked to their Accelerated Reader ZPD. A reading diary will be supplied to share information about progress between school and home. Please check, sign and (ideally) comment frequently.

Spellings and Spelling Frame

Spellings, following a pattern or rule, will be handed out on a Friday to be learned for the following Friday. We will practice these spellings in school in addition to what the children do at home. Spellings can be accessed online using the Spelling Frame website. The website includes a number of games and activities to help practice these spellings.

Times Table Rock Stars

Children will have a Times Table Rock Stars account assigned to them. The site uses a fun and engaging game to support children in learning their multiplication and division facts. Children will use the site daily in school and it is expected that children access it multiple times per week at home.

End of Day Collection

School finishes at 3.15pm. Year 5 will line up on the top yard and will be dismissed by Year 5 staff once the adult picking up has been identified. To support with the transition to Year 6 and secondary school, children in Year 5 can walk home independently. Children must have a permission slip signed and returned to school before this is permitted.
