PSHE

Subject Leader: Mrs Deavin

Subject Role

PSHE Education is a planned programme of learning through which children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.

PSHE at Caedmon

At Caedmon Primary School, we are committed to developing children as healthy, independent and responsible members of society who understand their rights and responsibilities towards themselves, others in school and the local and global community. We aim to develop children’s awareness of their thoughts and feelings as they happen, in the moment, and with no judgement so that they have the skills and understanding to make informed choices.

We use the 1decision scheme of work to support teaching and learning in PSHE and RSE. We follow this programme from Reception through to Year 6.

Intent

At Caedmon Primary School, it is our intent that all children will be ‘lifelong learners’ with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. We offer a nurturing learning environment in which each child is encouraged to develop their full potential and where their achievements and successes are celebrated and rewarded.

As a school, we believe that children are all individuals and therefore, we aim to encourage mutual respect, responsibility and foster self-esteem in a happy, nurturing and caring atmosphere. The teaching and learning of PSHE using the 1 Decision programme supports this.

Implementation

PSHE is taught through the 1decision programme, which provides a progressive, structured and age-appropriate curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6. The scheme is carefully mapped to the statutory requirements for Relationships Education, Health Education and age-appropriate RSE, ensuring comprehensive coverage of key knowledge, skills and understanding.

Lessons are delivered regularly and follow a sequenced curriculum that builds on prior learning. Through engaging videos, discussion activities, scenario-based learning and reflection tasks, pupils explore themes including personal safety, healthy relationships, physical and mental wellbeing, online safety, citizenship, diversity and economic wellbeing.

Teachers create a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment where pupils feel confident to express their views, ask questions and discuss sensitive issues. PSHE is further enhanced through assemblies, themed events, safeguarding work, British Values, and cross-curricular links.

Assessment is primarily formative, with teachers using discussion, questioning, observations and pupil reflection to monitor understanding and identify misconceptions. The curriculum is adapted where necessary to respond to the needs of individual pupils, classes and the wider school community.

Impact

As a result of the PSHE curriculum, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to become healthy, safe, responsible and active members of society.

Pupils demonstrate an age-appropriate understanding of:

  • How to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy.
  • How to form and maintain positive relationships.
  • How to stay safe online and in the wider community.
  • The importance of respect, equality and inclusion.
  • Their rights, responsibilities and role within society.

Children are able to discuss key PSHE concepts confidently and apply their learning to real-life situations. They show increasing resilience, independence and emotional literacy, enabling them to manage challenges and seek support when needed.

The impact of the curriculum is evident through pupils' positive attitudes, respectful behaviour, strong understanding of safeguarding messages and readiness for the next stage of education. Through the consistent use of the 1decision programme, pupils leave our school equipped with the personal, social and emotional skills required to thrive both academically and in later life.
