At Caedmon, we strongly believe that learning to read is one of the most important skills a child will ever develop - strong readers become successful learners!

Synthetic phonics provides the firm foundations children need to begin their reading journey with confidence. We follow the Read Write Inc phonics programme developed by Ruth Miskin, which gradually develops children's awareness of sounds and letters, sound blending, and word reading.

We teach phonics every day for 30 minutes from Reception to Year 2.  Read Write Inc  is proven to develop, “fluent, enthusiastic readers; deep comprehension of texts; confident speakers and keen writers”.

Children are streamed into ability groups across the school to ensure they are sufficiently challenged. The skills children learn in their phonics sessions aid their development in other subject areas, particularly Literacy. With a little help from ‘Fred the Frog’, children learn how to decode words using phonic knowledge, in order to become confident readers.
